Wanna smell me on Facebook?

In the year 1960, during the screening of Hollywood movie ‘Scent of Mystery 30 different sorts of fragrances were injected all throughout the movie hall in an effort to appeal to the visiters sensations and make them feel as a part of the movie itself. That was the very first and the only time that the Smell-O-Vision was used to enable viewers interact with their surroundings.

40 years later DigiScents created a product called the ISmell scent box. The company had big dreams of scent-enabled websites being developed and programmers including instructions for the release of different smells at various points throughout video games and much more. Sadly DigiScents failed to attract the investment it needed and went bust in 2001.

And now in the year 2010 a Japanis telecommunications company NTT COM is stil testing their new device that adds a sense of smell to the internet called the I-Aroma. It conceals six oil-based scents which are combined to create a wide variety of scents. the device links to a computer via USB, and interacts with software to release scents. the idea is that as you are surfing the web, different websites can have different smells, adding another sense to the web experience. other examples could include associating scents with your different friends on IM or Facebook or adding a sense of smell to your gaming experiences.

So smell you later on Facebook!
